It is one of those mysteries we are still trying to unravel.
A brief read on google shows it may be landmarks used and made by desert travelers to point out safe points of interest such as watering holes and caves for shelter to others I remember watching where aliens were mentioned on the larger formations only visible from the air.
Often times such older formations have a much simpler purpose, to aid folks of the time to either time things with harvests and whatnot or to use as simple landmarks in land navigation before technology such as GPS existed. And yes even then there were folks that loved to leave their immortal mark by making something that would stand the test of time though back then it was to ensure that it was for a positive benefit for all as a legacy, typically.
