Probably just semantics. They dont talk about spirit ever, just soul. And even that word wouldn´t be correct as it has religious connotation. People divide everything into so many categories, they don´t.

Humans need to come up with a new word for "Soul", as this is indeed insinuated to religion.

Could be said this way. Spirit is wider than a soul, more complex and closer to Source, like a big collective of souls. A soul is individualized fragment of Source.

A Spirit is an individualized holographic fractal of ‘Source’* that exists in a density known as the Spirit Realm.
The Soul exists in a different density known as the Soul Realm and is the Spirit being’s vessel of expression.
The Soul is usually the Spirit beings’ creation and its purpose is to allow the Spirit being to experience ‘physicality’.
The Spirit being is the consciousness and the Soul is its collection of memories and experiences developed over many incarnations.
A Spirit being, depending on how evolved it is, can express itself through more than one soul vessel.
The human avatar is the extension of the Soul’s expression into the third density.
The combination of Spirit, Soul and Avatar defines the individual abilities of the Physical being.
Spirits are how they are built, but Souls and Avatars can grow into improved versions of themselves through the raising of their vibration via personal development.

*‘Source’ is an inadequate term as it implies a single point of origin when reference is to a creative energy that is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. In short an all powerful, all knowing, ever present creative energy.
